In the 1973-74 season, SS Lazio did something legendary. They won the Serie A title (the Scudetto) for the very first time in their history. Normally, this is the ultimate “golden ticket.” It meant they should have played in the next season’s European Cup (which is today’s UEFA Champions League).

But instead of playing against the best of the best, Lazio spent the 1974-75 season stuck at home. Why? Because a few months earlier, they had turned a football match into a literal battlefield.

Founded in 1900 in Rome, Lazio is one of Italy’s oldest clubs and has long carried a complicated political and social identity, with parts of its fanbase and even some players associated with far‑right symbolism, especially in the 1970s.

Their first ever Serie A title came in 1973‑74, when a recently promoted, fiercely physical side shocked traditional powers like Juventus, Inter and Milan to win the Scudetto in the middle of Italy’s violent ‘Years of Lead’, in Italian: Anni di piombo. That title‑winning squad, remembered as the ‘Lazio of the pistols,’ was famous not just for its football but for internal splits, extremist politics and a reputation for turning matches into battles, all of which framed the chaos of that night, the one that shut their door.

The Storm of Italy

To understand this story, you have to know that the 1970s was a different world. There was no VAR, fewer cameras, and the games were way more aggressive. Lazio had a massive reputation for being “notorious” and “evil” on the pitch.

They were basically the “villains” of European football back then:

• In 1970, they got into a massive street fight with Arsenal players.

• Managers from other teams, like Manchester United’s Tommy Docherty, said they should be “banned for all time”.

• Even the chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association at the time said Lazio didn’t play by the rules.

The international drama started in the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League). Lazio was playing an English team called Ipswich Town.

In the first leg in England, Ipswich absolutely destroyed Lazio 4-0. This humiliated the Italians. By the time the second leg rolled around in Rome on 7 November 1973, the atmosphere was like a powder keg ready to explode.

Lazio actually had a superstar striker named Giorgio Chinaglia. He was a beast—he’d scored 24 goals in the Italian league that year. In this game against Ipswich, he was on fire and even scored a hat-trick.

The Match that Became a Riot

Lazio was winning the game 4-2. They were playing amazingly, but because they lost the first game so badly, they were still losing on aggregate score.

In two-legged knockout games, you add the goals from both matches. Ipswich had 4, Lazio had 0 in the first game. In the second, Lazio had 4, Ipswich had 2. Total: 6-4 to Ipswich. Result, Lazio was losing.

The “explosion” happened in the 73rd minute. The referee gave Ipswich a penalty. Ipswich scored it, and the Lazio fans—and players—went absolutely ballistic.

The stadium went nuts. Fans invaded the pitch, engaging in fights with police who were forced to use tear gas to disperse the "angry fans". British newspapers described the scene as "The Roman Storm," reporting that Union Jacks (UK flags) were burned in the stands while missiles—including bricks and bottles—rained down.

If the pitch was bad, the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms was a horror movie. As the Ipswich players tried to escape the chaos, the Lazio players allegedly attacked them.

Ipswich’s goalkeeper, David Best, was “hacked down” from behind and kicked while he was on the floor. Ipswich manager Bobby Robson was only three feet away and saw the whole thing. He claimed a Lazio player named Giuseppe Wilson was the one who kicked Best. It was so scary that Best said it was the “most frightening experience” of his life.

The Punishment

The press was horrified. Headlines called Lazio the “Evil Men of Europe”. On 16 November 1973, UEFA dropped the hammer:

• The Ban: Lazio was banned from all international competitions for one year.

• The Fine: They were fined £1,500 (which was a lot of money back then).

Here is the part that really hurts for Lazio fans. While they were banned from Europe, they were playing the best football in Italy. They won the 1973-74 Serie A title.

Under normal rules, the winner of the Italian league gets to play in the European Cup (the Champions League). It’s the highest honour in club football. But because of the riot against Ipswich, UEFA said “No”.

Lazio became the “Champion without a European Cup”. They had the trophy, they had the superstar (Chinaglia), but they were stuck at home because of their own bad behaviour.

The 25-Year Wait

Unfortunately, the consequences lasted way longer than just one year. After that championship-winning team broke up, Lazio struggled. They didn’t get another chance to play in the top European competition (rebranded as the UEFA Champions League) until the 1999-2000 season.

That is 25 years of waiting. An entire generation of fans grew up never seeing their team play in the biggest tournament in the world, all because of one night of thuggery and war in Rome.

The Iron Grip of Fuad Musayev

At the heart of Azerbaijan’s “Lost Decade” was Fuad Musayev, the first president of the AFFA (Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan). A classic Soviet-style apparatchik, Musayev ran the sport with an iron fist for over eleven years.

Under his watch, the national team became a punching bag for Europe. The lowest point came in 1995 with a 10-0 drubbing by France. Despite the humiliation, Musayev remained untouchable. He operated in a “silk office,” insulated from the fans, focusing more on political survival and maintaining control over FIFA and UEFA funding than on fixing the crumbling pitches in Baku.

The Great Rebellion and the “League of Shadows”

By 2002, the tension reached a breaking point. The country’s top clubs—led by giants like Neftchi Baku and Shamkir—grew tired of the lack of transparency. They accused the AFFA of financial mismanagement and “dictatorial” scheduling.

The clubs launched a full-scale rebellion, refusing to play under the AFFA’s jurisdiction. They formed their own independent league, but the “Generals” struck back with total war:

• The Shutdown: The federation declared the rebel clubs illegal.

• The Blackout: For the entire 2002–2003 season, official football simply stopped. There were no recognized matches and no European qualification.

• The Sanctions: FIFA and UEFA sided with the federation’s authority, suspending Azerbaijan from the international community.

For a year, the stadiums grew silent. A whole generation of players—men in their prime—saw their careers stall as the grass turned to dust and the fans were left with nothing but radio silence.

A Global Pattern of Tyranny

Unfortunately, Azerbaijan was not an isolated case. In 2003, football across the globe was being used as a tool for ego and power:

• Iraq: Under Uday Hussein, the national team lived in terror. A missed penalty wasn’t just a mistake; it was a crime. Players reported being imprisoned and tortured for losing matches. Here, the “Football General” was a literal tyrant’s son.

• Russia: Vyacheslav Koloskov presided over the Russian Football Union for decades. Like Musayev, he was a master of bureaucracy, surviving scandals and poor performances while the domestic game struggled to modernize beyond its Soviet roots.

• Brazil: Even in the land of Pelé, Ricardo Teixeira ran the game like a monarch. Backed by his political connections, he remained “invincible” for years despite constant allegations of corruption, using the success of Brazil’s players as a shield for his leadership.

The Lasting Scars

The “General” mentality treats football as a top-down hierarchy rather than a grassroots sport. The consequences for Azerbaijan were devastating:

• Talent Stagnation: Without a league, young players had no platform. This created a decade-long “quality gap” in the national team that took years to bridge.

• Infrastructure Decay: While neighboring nations were building modern arenas, Azerbaijani stadiums became dangerous, crumbling ruins.

• The Trust Gap: The most painful loss was the fans’ passion. The “beautiful game” had become a sordid political soap opera, and it took a generation for the public to return to the stands.

Lessons from the Abyss

The 2002–2003 blackout eventually forced a change. The sheer scale of the disaster meant Musayev could no longer hold on. His departure marked the slow, painful beginning of a new era.

Today, Azerbaijan boasts some of the most modern stadiums in Europe and has hosted major finals. However, the ghost of the “Football Generals” serves as a warning:

When football becomes about the men in suits rather than the kids with the ball, the game is the first thing to die.

Greenland is a land of extremes. It is the world’s largest island but also one of the loneliest. Only 56,000 people live there, scattered across rocky coasts. Most of the land is covered by a permanent ice sheet, making it nearly impossible to build roads or grow grass. In Disko Bay, the sound of a referee’s whistle echoes past massive, slow-moving icebergs…

This is the amazing Greenland—a place where “home advantage” means playing in freezing summer temperatures on a landscape that looks like another planet.

The Arctic Frontier

Geography is the biggest opponent in Greenlandic football. There are no roads between towns. If a team from the capital, Nuuk, wants to play a match in Ilulissat, they must travel by plane or boat. Nature acts as the ultimate referee.

The climate is just as tough. For eight months of the year, the Arctic winter makes outdoor sports impossible. Even in the summer (June to August), temperatures often stay around 6°C. Because the ground is frozen deep underground (permafrost), natural grass won’t grow. For years, players had to compete on “clay” or gravel pitches as hard as rock.

One Week of Madness

Because the weather window is so small, Greenland hosts the Greenlandic Football Championship or “Isikkamik Arsaalluni Pissartanngorniunneq” (Greenlandic) / “Grønlandsmesterskab i fodbold” (Danish)—arguably the shortest football league on Earth.

Instead of a nine-month season, the final tournament is packed into only one crazy week in August. After regional qualifiers, the top eight teams meet in one host city. To save money, players often sleep on floor mats in local schools or gyms.

They play almost every day, leading to wild results. Scorelines like 10-0 are common because of the gap between top clubs and small-town teams. The powerhouse club is B-67, known as the “Real Madrid of Greenland” with 16 titles, though rivals like N-48 have recently challenged their throne.

The International Dream

For a long time, Greenland looked toward Europe (UEFA) because of its political ties to Denmark. However, UEFA requires members to be independent nations recognized by the UN. This left Greenland stuck, even though their neighbors, the Faroe Islands, got in before the rules changed in the 1990s.

In 2022, Greenland shifted its focus toward CONCACAF (North and Central America). Geographically, Greenland is part of North America, and CONCACAF is more open to territories like Aruba or Martinique. By early 2025, Greenland’s FA President, Kenneth Kleist, was optimistic that they were “quite close” to joining.

Geopolitical tension in 2025

Then, politics got in the way. In early 2025, a crucial meeting in Miami between Greenland and football officials was thrown into chaos.

The reason? US President Donald Trump renewed his interest in the United States annexing or buying Greenland. This sparked massive geopolitical tension. The meeting was canceled, and talks were moved to London. While Greenlandic officials tried to stay neutral, the shadow of the White House loomed over the sport.

In summer 2025, the dream suffered a massive blow: CONCACAF officially rejected Greenland’s application without a clear explanation. Greenland’s 5,600 registered players were once again left on the outside looking in.

The Legend of Tekle Ghebrelul

One of the most famous figures in Greenlandic football is Tekle Ghebrelul. Originally a refugee and child soldier from the Horn of Africa (Eritrea), he moved to Greenland via Denmark and became a national icon.

Ghebrelul transformed the game. He led B-67 to three titles and managed the national team. However, his story ended in sadness. After he was targeted by a racist post from a rival player, a dispute with the federation led to his firing. Many players threatened to quit the national team in protest, but his legacy of discipline remains the foundation of the modern team.

Tactics and the Future

Right now, the team is in a bit of a transition phase under their coach, Morten Rutkjær. He’s been working hard to turn a group of passionate players into a professional squad, but he has to work with their natural instincts.

Because the winters are so long, most Greenlanders grow up playing futsal (indoor football), which makes them incredibly good at ball handling in tight spots. As Rutkjær puts it, they are “very technical,” but their first instinct is always to just run forward and attack. To balance that out, he’s been drilling them on the “low block”—basically teaching them how to park the bus and defend deep so they don’t get caught out on a big field.

But even with the right tactics, they’re hitting a massive wall when it comes to infrastructure. You can’t exactly host a FIFA match when your pitch is covered in snow half the year.

That’s why everyone is talking about “The Dome.” Even though they’ve finally moved from gravel to artificial turf, they still desperately need a fully covered, heated stadium in Nuuk. A 2,000-seat indoor arena might sound small to some, but for them, it’s the only way they’ll ever be able to play international football year-round without freezing their boots off.

Conclusion: A Nation of Footballers

Despite all the political drama and the rejection from the big leagues, football is still the biggest thing in Greenland. About 10% of the population plays—which is a huge number, maybe the highest in the world—and in these tiny, isolated towns, a match is often the only thing for people to do together.

The game is even part of the culture. The name for the Northern Lights, “Arsarnerit,” literally means “the ones playing football.” It comes from that old story about ancestors playing with a walrus skull (and taking the heads of naughty kids who stayed out too late).

At the end of the day, Greenland doesn’t need a FIFA membership or a fancy trophy to be “official.” They have their own flag, a tough way of playing, and a community that genuinely cares about the sport. I am getting soft hearted here, but for me, that’s more than enough.

In the middle of the 1950s, football was changing. While teams played in leagues in their own countries, there was no way to find out which team was truly the best in all of Europe.

The cup before the cup

Before the European Cup existed, there was something called the Latin Cup. This was the most important trophy for teams in Southern Europe. In 1955, Real Madrid won this trophy by beating the French team Stade de Reims 2-0.

This was the moment the world met a young, lightning-fast player named Paco Gento. Along with the famous Alfredo Di Stéfano, he was part of a squad that was becoming one of the greatest teams in history. Guess which one.

However, newspapers in England were making big claims. After the English team Wolverhampton Wanderers beat a strong Hungarian team in a friendly match, the English papers called them the “World Champions.” This made people in France want to act. Visionaries at a famous sports newspaper believed that a real tournament was needed to decide who was best on the grass, not just in the headlines.

The Meeting in Paris

The European Cup competition was truly born in the spring of 1955 at the Hotel George V in Paris. This is where Santiago Bernabéu, the president of Real Madrid, met with French journalists to talk about the plan. Bernabéu asked a thousand questions and gave even more ideas. He saw how great this could be and became a leader in creating the tournament.

A new group called UEFA was a bit nervous about the idea, but they invited sixteen clubs to play in the first-ever 1955-56 season. Some countries, like the Soviet Union and England, said “no” (Chelsea wanted to play, but their leaders told them they couldn’t, amazing story here.). Even so, the tournament moved forward with legendary teams like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Sporting Lisbon, and Partizan Belgrade.

The Way the Game Was Played (The Rules)

Back in 1956, the tournament was veeeery different from the Champions League you see on TV today.

• Win or Go Home: Today, teams play in “league phase” first. Back then, it was a “knockout” from the very start. If you lost, you were out.

• No Substitutes: This is the craziest part. If a player got hurt or tired, there were no bench players allowed to come on. The team just had to play with 10 men, (like FK Sarajevo vs Manchester United).

• No Yellow or Red Cards: Believe it or not, the colorful cards we see today didn't exist until 1970. Before that, referees had to give a verbal warning to players. If someone was being particularly rowdy, the ref just had to point to the sidelines and tell them to leave.

The Road to Paris: Real Madrid’s Historic Journey

Round of 16: The Swiss “Lock”

The journey started on September 8, 1955. Real Madrid played against Servette. The Swiss team used a strategy called the “lock” (or cerrojo). They put almost all their players in defense so Madrid couldn’t find any space to play.

For 74 minutes, the game was quite boring because Servette had eight men standing inside their own penalty area. Finally, the captain, Miguel Muñoz, scored the first-ever European goal for Real Madrid. Madrid moved to the next round with a total score of 7-0.

Quarter-Finals: The Battle in the Snow

On Christmas Day in 1955, Real Madrid played against Partizan Belgrade and won 4-0. But the second game in Yugoslavia was a legendary story of survival. The field was covered in 40 centimeters of snow, and it was five degrees below zero!

The ground was so slippery it felt more like ice hockey than football. Madrid lost the game 3-0, but because they had scored 4 goals in the first game, they moved on with a total score of 4-3. They were “ice warriors”.

Semi-Finals: The Heavyweight Clash

In April 1956, Real Madrid played the giant Italian team, AC Milan. To stay calm before the big match, the Madrid players actually went to see an opera, and it It worked. They stayed organized and calm on the pitch and won the round to reach the grand final.

The Legends: Di Stéfano and Gento

Real Madrid had two “superheroes” who made this all possible:

1. Alfredo Di Stéfano: They called him “The Blond Arrow.” He was the leader. Unlike other players who stayed in one spot, Di Stéfano was everywhere. He would help the defenders, pass the ball in the middle, and sprint to the front to score. He scored in five straight finals.

2. Paco Gento: He was the speed. Gento was so fast that defenders couldn’t catch him. He is still the only player in history to win six European Cups.

The Final: The First Coronation in Paris

On June 13, 1956, the final was held in Paris. Real Madrid faced the local favorites, Stade de Reims.

The match started like a nightmare for them. In just ten minutes, the French team scored two goals. Most teams would have given up, but Di Stéfano led a huge comeback. The game was a roller coaster, going back and forth until the score was 3-3. Finally, in the 79th minute, Héctor Rial scored the winning goal to make it 4-3.

The Legacy

When the final whistle blew, Real Madrid were named the first-ever Kings of Europe. And this first victory started a “dynasty” where they won the trophy five years in a row. The title was hard earned.

Santiago Bernabéu said it best: “Madrid will always know how to do its duty.” The era of the most successful club in history had truly begun.

European Cup: An Atlas of Champions

Imagine a version of the Champions League without VAR, without perfectly manicured pitches, and without private jets for every player. Welcome to wild and rough football of the 1960s.

Today, we are used to seeing the same big teams dominate Europe, but back in the 1967-68 season, something crazy happened. A team from the mountainous city of Sarajevo—then part of Yugoslavia, now the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina—crashed the party.

This is the story of FK Sarajevo, the first-ever Bosnian club to play in the European Cup. It follows a group of student-athletes who went from winning their local league to facing the world-famous Manchester United. It was a journey that had everything: A nightmare trip through the mountains, a controversial "ghost goal," and a high-stakes rematch that turned so heated it ended with a fight in the stadium tunnel (video below 👇)

Part I: The new kids on the block

To understand how massive this was, you have to know a bit about the Yugoslav First League. Back then, it was one of the toughest leagues in the world. It was usually dominated by the “Big Four” clubs: Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk Split, Red Star Belgrade, and Partizan Belgrade.

FK Sarajevo? They were considered a “modest” team. They weren’t supposed to win the title, so they were the underdogs. But the 1966-67 season changed everything. FK Sarajevo went on an incredible run and on Sunday, 2 July 1967, they smashed a team called Čelik (5-2) and officially won the league for the first time in their history.

The team made it happen

And every great team has a hero. For Sarajevo, it was a 20-year-old striker named Vahidin Musemić. He wasn’t just a footballer; he was also a philosophy student. While other players were focused solely on the game, he was studying big ideas and scoring big goals, not bad. He finished the season as the top scorer with 15 goals in 30 games. The newspapers loved him and gave him a brilliant nickname: “The Golden Shot”.

Alongside him was a mix of local legends. There was Mirsad Fazlagić, the captain and experienced defende , and Sreten Šiljkut, the playmaker who was the oldest guy in the team and jokingly called “Dad” by his teammates.

This team had had done the impossible, they became champions.

Next stop: The European Cup.

Part II: Mission Impossible for Manchester United

Sarajevo got through the first round of the cup easily, beating a team from Cyprus. But in the Second Round (the Last 16), the draw was brutal. They were paired against the English champions: Manchester United. This was the United of legends. We are talking about Bobby Charlton and George Best—players who are basically royalty in football history.

But here is the funny thing: Manchester United had no idea who FK Sarajevo were. There was no internet, no YouTube highlights, and no scouting apps.

United’s legendary manager, Matt Busby, was worried. He described Sarajevo as an “inaccessible mountain stronghold”. He was so concerned about the travel that he booked a special charter jet—something United hadn’t done for a long trip in nearly ten years- and decided to fly out early to spy on Sarajevo during a league match. He watched them play and… he wasn’t impressed at all. Sarajevo actually lost that game 1-0.

Busby told the British press:

“They played far under First Division level. They were slow and lacked inspiration.”

He basically thought it was going to be a walk in the park. But he was wrong.

Part III: The Siege of Sarajevo (First Leg)

Date: 15 November 1967 Venue: Koševo Stadium, Sarajevo

The Scene: 45,000 to 50,000 fans going absolutely wild.

The atmosphere was electric. The local fans used sirens and bells to make a deafening noise. But for the Sarajevo players, things went wrong almost immediately. In the 29th minute, Sarajevo’s winger Boško Prodanović got a serious knee injury.

Now, here is a rule that sounds crazy today:

Substitutes were not allowed in the European Cup back then. If a player got injured, you just had to play with one less person.

So, for more than an hour, Sarajevo had to play against the mighty Manchester United with only 10 men.

But, despite having fewer players, Sarajevo actually bagged a goal. In the 24th minute, the “Golden Shot” Musemić scored, and the stadium went crazy. But… the Italian referee waved it off, saying the ball hadn’t fully crossed the line. So the fans went nuts, just nuts.

Manchester United, finally realising this wasn’t going to be easy, decided to defend for their lives. The newspapers called it a “defensive barrier”. The Sarajevo defence, led by Fazlagić, was a brick wall. Even with 10 men, they stopped Best and Charlton from scoring.

Final Score: 0-0.

It became an heroic draw for the Bosnians.

Part IV: The Battle of Old Trafford (Second Leg)

Date: 29 November 1967 Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester

Attendance: Over 60,000 people.

Two weeks later, both teams met again in England, but Sarajevo was in trouble, their injured winger, Prodanović, was out for six months. His replacement was an 18-year-old economics student named Salih Delalić, who had barely played any professional games. The Sarajevo manager admitted their chances were slim, saying it was “90 to 1 against” them.

When the match started, Manchester United was fast. They wanted to finish the job early.

• 11th Minute: John Aston scores for United. 1-0.

The crowd expected it to finish quickly, but Sarajevo got tough. Really tough. They started tackling hard—”ruthless tackling” according to the English press. Sarajevo’s Fahrudin Prljača completely lost his cool and kicked George Best. The referee had no choice after this: Red Card for Fahrudin Prljača. So, once again, Sarajevo was playing with 10 men.

The United players were getting frustrated, but then scored.

• 65th Minute: The genius George Best scores for United. 2-0.

But this goal caused a massive argument. The Sarajevo players claimed the ball had gone out of play before it was crossed to Best. They surrounded the referee, furious, and things got ugly.

Under a situation like this most teams would have given up. They were 2-0 down, away from home, with a player sent off. But not this team, not FK Sarajevo.

• 88th Minute: The teenager Salih Delalić scored for Sarajevo 2-1.

It was too late to win the game, but it showed incredible spirit. They had fought the English champions all the way to the end.

The Tunnel Fight

Unfortunately the drama didn’t end at the final whistle. As the players walked off the pitch, it kicked off in the tunnel. The reports from the night say that the Sarajevo goalkeeper, Refik Muftić, was so angry about the second goal and the physical battle that he actually threw a punch at the United manager, Matt Busby.

Busby later tried to laugh it off, calling it a “wee skirmish” (a small fight), but the headlines the next day were shocking: “KEEPER THREW PUNCH AT UNITED BOSS”.

Part V: Why This Story Matters

Manchester United won the tie 2-1 in the end on aggregate. In fact, they went on to win the whole tournament that season, becoming the champions of Europe.

But FK Sarajevo left with their heads held high, because:

1. They made history: They were the first club from Bosnia to ever play on this stage.

2. They were tough: They played huge chunks of the tie with only 10 men and still gave United the hardest game of their lives.

3. They proved the doubters wrong: Matt Busby thought they weren’t good enough for the English First Division. By the end, he knew he had been in a real battle.

Sarajevo would eventually win the league again in 1985, but that first adventure in 1967 remains legendary. It was the time a group of students and locals came down from the mountains and went toe-to-toe with the giants of football.

With only 331,000 people (that’s fewer people than some big cities have in just one neighborhood), they weren’t supposed to be good at football. They were famous for Handball, not goals. But in 2016, they pulled off the biggest “level up” in sports history.

We were serious before, for a long time, Icelandic kids couldn’t practice in the winter because the ground was frozen solid. Basically playing football in Iceland was a logistical nightmare. But the game changed with the construction of indoor football halls (the “Soccer Houses”), allowing technical training year-round.

It created a generation of players who knew each other inside out—literally, they had known each other all their lives. They were led by a Swedish manager, Lars Lagerbäck, who didn’t speak a word of Icelandic but was revered as a deity, and Heimir Hallgrímsson.

Fun Fact: The goalkeeper, Hannes Halldórsson, wasn't just a shot-stopper; he was a professional filmmaker who directed Iceland’s Eurovision entry before stopping shots at the Euros from the world’s best strikers.

From the Bottom to the Top. Euro 2016.

In 2011, Iceland was ranked 121st in the world. That’s near the bottom of the list, alongside very small teams like Andorra and San Marino.

But then, they started winning. In the qualifiers for the Euro 2016 tournament, they had to play against the Netherlands—one of the best teams in history. Everyone thought Iceland would lose. Instead, Iceland beat them (twice). They knocked the Dutch giants out of the tournament and booked their own tickets to France.

Iceland against Portugal (and Ronaldo)

In their very first game of the tournament, they faced Portugal and their superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo. Iceland played a style called a “Low Block” (this is when a team stays very close to their own goal, like a human wall, making it impossible for the other team to run past them).

They defended like lions and the game ended 1-1. Ronaldo was so frustrated that he complained Iceland had a “small mentality.” But Iceland didn’t care—they had just taken one point from the best player in the world, that was enough.

Iceland vs. England.

The biggest moment came in the Round of 16, against England.

England is the home of the Premier League and some of the richest players on Earth. When England scored a penalty in the 4th minute, everyone thought the “Iceland Dream” was over. But just two minutes later, Iceland used a “Long Throw-in” (throwing the ball really far into the box like a corner kick) to score. Then, they scored again to make it 2-1. They defended with everything they had and when the final whistle blew, England was out, and tiny Iceland was in the Quarter-Finals.

The world was stunned. The fans in the stadium started the “Viking Clap”—a loud HÚ! followed by a giant clap that sounded like thunder, impressive…

The End, France

Finally, Quarter-Finals. Iceland had to face the hosts, France, in a stadium filled with nearly 80,000 people. By now, the Icelandic players were exhausted after such an effort and France was a super team filled with world-class stars, and they won the game 5-2.

But even though the scoreboard said they lost, the world didn’t see it that way.

As the final whistle blew, the French fans did something amazing and beautiful: they stopped cheering for their own team and started clapping for Iceland. The Icelandic players, walked over to their wall of fans. Together, both team fans they did one last “Viking Clap.”

Clap... HÚ! Clap... HÚ!

It was a moment of incredible sportsmanship, that showed football isn’t just about trophies or being the richest. It’s about a tiny group of friends from a cold island showing the whole world that if you have enough heart, you can stand up to anybody. They went home as heroes, greeted by a parade that took up almost the entire country.

Today, looking back from the year 2026, Chelsea Football Club is a giant. They are famous all over Europe, having won the Champions League twice. But did you know there is a huge, strange gap in their history?

There was a time when Chelsea had to wait 44 years between their first chance to play in Europe and when they actually stepped onto the pitch.

To understand why, we have to travel back in time to the 1950s. This was a world of black-and-white newspapers and heavy leather footballs. It is the story of how Chelsea won big, but were then forced to quit the very first European Cup.

Part I: The Golden Champions (1954-55)

The 1954-55 season was set to be amazing for the Blues (there were not still known as “The Blues yet”, that happened in the 1960’s when Chelsea changed their kit colours to all blue with white socks, but still I like to name them like that). It was the club’s 50th birthday—their “Golden Jubilee”—and they wanted to celebrate in style.

They had a manager named Ted Drake. Before him, people thought Chelsea was a bit of a joke. But Drake turned them into a strong, scary team.

The big moment came in April 1955. Chelsea played against Sheffield Wednesday. The math was simple: if they won, they were champions. But Chelsea didn’t just win; they crushed them 3-0 and the fans at Stamford Bridge went wild. For the first time in 50 years, Chelsea were the Kings of England. But winning the league was about to get even more exciting. A few months earlier, people had decided that the next season (1955-56) would have a brand-new tournament: The European Cup.

The idea was to take 16 champion teams from different countries and have them battle to see who was the best in all of Europe. Since Chelsea just won the English league, the ticket belonged to them.

Part II: A Brand New Tournament is Born

While Chelsea was celebrating in London, the rules of European football were being written in Paris, France. So on April 2, 1955, exciting news came out. The first “European Football Cup” was created. It was organized by a French newspaper called L’Équipe.

The rules were simple and ruthless:

• Knock-out style: If you lose, you go home. No second chances.

• Two games: You play one game at your stadium, and one game at their stadium.

• Fast schedule: The first games would happen by October 1955.

It was a revolutionary idea. For the first time ever, there was a real way to prove which club was the best in the world.

Part III: Chelsea vs. The Swedish Champs

By July 1955, everyone was buzzing with excitement. The names were drawn from a hat to see who would play who and Chelsea got a really cool matchup. They were drawn to play against Djurgården, the champions of Sweden. Everything was ready. The dates were being set. Both teams were ready to play.

There were other huge games planned too:

• Real Madrid (Spain) vs. Servette (Switzerland)

• Milan (Italy) vs. Saarbrücken (Germany)

• Rot-Weiss Essen (Germany) vs. Hibernian (Scotland)

Notice that last one? Hibernian, a team from Scotland, was invited too. They were 100% ready to go. Chelsea had the invite, the opponent, and the talent. But they were missing one thing: Permission.

Part IV: The “No way” from the Bosses

Just as things were getting exciting, the people in charge of English football ruined the party. It seems crazy to us now, because the Champions League is so famous, but back then, the Football Association (The FA) and the Football League didn’t like it.

On July 27, 1955, the newspaper headlines read: “CHELSEA GET KO BEFORE GAME.”

Why did they stop Chelsea? The FA gave a very boring reason. They said the European Cup would be a “distraction.”

• Too many games: They claimed playing in Europe would make the players too tired for the English league.

• Workload: They did the math and said if Chelsea went to the final, they would have to play 10 extra games.

To a modern fan, complaining about 10 extra games sounds silly. But the FA was stubborn. They thought the English League was the only thing that mattered. So, Chelsea had to pull out.

Part V: The Reaction, Everyone Was Upset

The people organizing the tournament in Europe were not happy. They really wanted an English team involved to make the tournament look important. Newspapers reported that the European President, Mr. Schwartz, was frustrated. He said, “We are very sore about their not being able to fulfil the fixture.”

Basically, they were hurt. The games against Djurgården were already planned. Now, the Swedish team had nobody to play against and the Djurgården asked if they could find a replacement team because six other countries were begging to take Chelsea’s spot.

Let’s not forget, the most embarrassing part for the English bosses was when they had to look at their neighbours, Scotland. The Scottish team, Hibernian, ignored the haters and played in the tournament anyway because they wanted the experience. They saw the future, while the English FA was stuck in the past.

Part VI: The Aftermath and the Regret

The 1955-56 European Cup went ahead without Chelsea. And guess what? It was a huge success. Fans loved it and newspapers loved it. Real Madrid won the final in Paris and started a dynasty, becoming the most famous team in the world.

The English FA realized they had made a huge mistake. They had to eat “humble pie” (admit they were wrong). When Manchester United won the English league the very next year, the FA allowed them to go play in Europe.

By May 1956, everyone admitted the tournament was a hit. Manchester United got to be the first English team to officially play. Chelsea, the team that should have been first, had to watch from home.

Part VII: 44 years later…

That ban hurt Chelsea for a long time. After winning the league in 1955, the team started to struggle and wouldn’t be the best in England again for decades.

It took 44 years for Chelsea to finally hear the Champions League music. They finally played in the 1999-2000 season. They had to win a qualifying match against a team from Latvia just to get in. But once they arrived, they made up for lost time.

And today, if we look at the records up to 2026, Chelsea is a monster in Europe. They missed their first shot, but they have since won the big trophy twice.

• 🏆 Champions: Winners in 2012 and 2021.

• 🥈 Finalists: Came second in 2008.

• 🌍 Always there: By 2026, they have played in the Champions League 20 times.

• 💪 Strong: They almost always make it past the group stages. Once, when they didn’t, they went and won the Europa League instead.

• John Terry: Played 111 matches. The Captain.

• Didier Drogba: Scored 36 goals. The hero of the big moments.

At the time, Belgrade was the heart of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a nation struggling through the aftermath of brutal ethnic conflicts. Amidst this chaos, a football team rose from total obscurity to the biggest stages in Europe, driven not by a sporting project, but by the shadow of a warlord.

The Man Behind the Curtain: A Miracle Built on Fear

Željko Ražnatović, universally known as Arkan, was far from a typical club owner. He was a notorious criminal, a former bank robber, and the leader of a feared paramilitary group called “The Tigers.”

After he failed in his attempt to buy the famous Serbian giants, Red Star Belgrade, he turned his attention to FK Obilić in 1996. At that moment, Obilić was just a small side from a Belgrade suburb playing in the lower divisions. However, under Arkan’s command, they began a meteoric rise that saw them climb to the top of the national standings at a speed that defied logic.

By 1998, FK Obilić achieved the unthinkable: they won the Yugoslav League title, breaking the historic dominance of Red Star and Partizan Belgrade. While the trophy was physically real, the “miracle” was incredibly dark.

Reports from that era describe a league governed entirely by fear rather than talent. Arkan’s soldiers—men who had recently returned from the battlefields—would sit in the stands in their uniforms, staring down the referees to ensure every whistle went in favor of Obilić. Opposing players shared terrifying stories of being threatened in the stadium tunnels, while others were reportedly kidnapped or locked in car trunks to force them into signing contracts.

Arkan famously told the international media that his secret was a strict discipline and a diet of “bacon and garlic,” but the world knew the success was built on pure, systematic intimidation.

The Violent Journey Across Europe

The league title granted this small Serbian club a ticket to the Champions League, forcing them to travel across the continent to face some of Europe’s most legendary teams. This created a massive diplomatic headache for football officials:

• To Munich, Germany: Obilić traveled northwest to face the giants Bayern Munich. The German football legends, led by Franz Beckenbauer, were disgusted by Arkan’s criminal reputation and refused to even acknowledge him or share a VIP box. On the pitch, Bayern’s professional quality was too much for the Serbians, winning 4-0 in Germany. However, the return leg in Belgrade ended in a 1-1 draw, a result Arkan used to claim that his “neighborhood team” could stand up to the best in the world.

• To Madrid, Spain: After being eliminated from the Champions League, Obilić moved into the UEFA Cup to play Atlético Madrid. Because of strict international sanctions and a UN embargo against Yugoslavia, the team was forbidden from using their own national planes. They had to navigate a complicated and exhausting route through neighboring countries just to reach the Spanish capital.

  The matches against Atlético Madrid were described by Spanish newspapers as a “war report” rather than a football summary. The Obilić players employed a style of play so violent that Atlético stars like Juninho and Jugovic were left with serious injuries. The atmosphere in the return leg, played at the Partizan stadium in Belgrade, was described as an “inferno” where the pressure from the stands was almost unbearable for the visiting Spanish side.

  

  To prevent UEFA from banning the club entirely due to his presence, Arkan officially stepped down and made his wife—the famous Serbian pop star Ceca—the club president. While Spanish police in Madrid were actively circulating “Wanted” posters with Arkan’s face on them, Ceca was the center of attention. She didn’t stay in the offices; she sat directly on the team bench as the official delegate, shouting tactical instructions and managing the players under the glare of hundreds of cameras.

Arkan’s Real Legacy, sadly

While he played the role of a football president, Arkan’s real legacy was one of blood and terror. As the leader of the “Serb Volunteer Guard” (the Tigers), he was responsible for extreme violence across Croatia and Bosnia. His forces were implicated in numerous atrocities, including ethnic cleansing, mass executions of civilians, and the systematic looting of towns. Arkan’s men were notorious for their role in the takeover of cities where hundreds of civilians were killed or forcibly displaced. In 1997, the International Criminal Tribunal formally indicted Arkan for crimes against humanity, specifically citing his responsibility for murder, torture, and the forced deportation of thousands of people.

The Collapse

So, the entire power structure of FK Obilić was tied to the life of one man. That empire of fear vanished on January 15, 2000, when Arkan was shot and killed in the lobby of the Intercontinental Hotel in Belgrade. His death marked the immediate end of the club’s era of influence.

Without Arkan’s shadow to protect them and his “Tigers” to intimidate the opposition, the club’s “magic” disappeared overnight. They lost their funding, their political protection, and their ability to win games. FK Obilić began a long, painful fall down the divisions, eventually disappearing from the professional map and landing in the 7th tier of Serbian football. Today, their stadium remains a quiet, decaying ghost of the past—a permanent reminder of a bizarre time when the capital of Serbia saw a warlord turn the “beautiful game” into a weapon of war and propaganda.

Yet the fairy tale never materialized. What began as a bold experiment unraveled into a nine months that exposed the cultural and tactical chasm between two footballing nations.

Redemption’s way

McClaren’s journey to Wolfsburg was a football odyssey defined by dizzying heights and painful lows. At Manchester United, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant, he had helped script the famous treble of 1999. At Middlesbrough, he made history by delivering the club’s first ever trophy — the 2004 League Cup — and guiding them to the UEFA Cup final in 2006. But it was his way as England manager that marked his name into folklore for all the wrong reasons. Failing to qualify for Euro 2008, and standing on the Wembley touchline with an umbrella in the rain during a crushing defeat to Croatia, McClaren was immortalized as “The Wally with the Brolly”.

His resurrection came in the Netherlands, where he meticulously rebuilt his reputation at Twente. Discipline, tactical clarity and belief carried the small Dutch club past giants PSV and Ajax to a first league title in their history.

The secret of THAT ‘wally with a brolly’ headline

The Champions Who Lost Their Roar

Wolfsburg, however, were not the same beast that had stormed into the Bundesliga crown under Felix Magath in 2009. That title had been forged in relentless physical conditioning and the partnership of Edin Džeko and Grafite. By the time McClaren arrived, the roar had gone. The club had stumbled to eighth place in 2009–10, weighed down by the dual burden of Champions League football and the loss of their championship momentum.

McClaren inherited a squad in flux. The championship core — Džeko, Josué, Misimović — remained, but around them were new high-profile signings: Diego Ribas from Juventus, Denmark’s Thomas Kahlenberg, Palermo’s young defender Simon Kjær, and a raw but hungry Mario Mandžukić from Dinamo Zagreb. On paper, the squad looked like an international all-star team: Italy’s Andrea Barzagli, Switzerland’s Diego Benaglio, Japan’s Makoto Hasebe, Germany’s Marcel Schäfer. But football is not played on paper, and chemistry is never guaranteed by the weight of passports.

When Philosophy clash

McClaren sought to transplant his Dutch blueprint of fluid, possession-based football onto a side schooled in Magath’s rigid, direct system. The result was a clash of philosophies. Players struggled to adapt, and the friction became most visible with Diego, the supremely talented Brazilian playmaker whose flair often ignored collective discipline, unfortunately.

The breaking point arrived on a cold February afternoon against Hannover 96. Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty, and McClaren instructed new striker Patrick Helmes to take it. Diego refused, seized the ball, and missed. A 1–0 defeat followed. The moment, trivial in isolation, symbolized everything: a manager’s authority undermined, a squad fragmented, and a club teetering towards crisis. Sporting director Dieter Hoeness was damning: “The players argued about it like kids in a playground. And because of that, we lost a match we should never have lost.” From that penalty spot, McClaren’s authority evaporated.

Results That Told Their Own Story

On the pitch, the numbers were unforgiving. Across 21 Bundesliga matches, Wolfsburg recorded just five wins. Eight draws and eight defeats left them 13th in the table, a single point above the relegation play-off. The team scored 26 goals, conceded 30, and played like shadows of their former selves. The nadir arrived in the DFB-Pokal, where second-division Energie Cottbus humbled them, erasing any illusions of stability.

For a club crowned champions only 20 months earlier, the fall was brutal. By February 2011, with results worsening and belief gone, Wolfsburg dismissed McClaren just nine months into his two-year contract. Pierre Littbarski was drafted in to steady the ship, but the damage had been done.

McClaren’s Wolfsburg adventure remains unique: he is still the only Englishman ever to have managed in the Bundesliga. Where Sir Bobby Robson once thrived in Portugal and Spain, and Roy Hodgson carved niches across Scandinavia, McClaren found no foothold in Germany.

I know it, I have been there (refeering youth leagues) decades ago for a short period of time and man, it can be really stressful.

Fair Play and Respect: How Ref Cams Are Educating Fans

This initiative is about more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful form of education. For years, governing bodies have promoted campaigns for respect for referees. Yet, for many supporters, officials remain distant figures—easy targets when a result goes wrong.

By putting the audience directly in the referee’s shoes, Ref Cam footage highlights the immense pressures and split-second judgements required to keep the game flowing. Think back to the Belgian Supercup in 2024, where DAZN broadcast the referee’s bodycam in the clash between Club Brugge and Union SG.

In this sense, Referee POV videos are a public service announcement. They show younger players and volatile coaches why dissent is punished, why a repeated foul draws a booking, and why respect for the official is non-negotiable for the sport to exist.
